5 year Anniversary for Brian

Brian recently received his 5 year service award from Transalta. Great job honey! Five years is a great accomplishment. Thanks for working hard for us. For his 5 years, he got to pick out an award and guess who was the recognition company that provided it…..O.C. Tanner! It was so fun and took me back to those great days I spent there. I kept telling him to call and talk to one of their great representatives on the phone.

It made me miss this fun time of year at O.C. Tanner. Last year we had a pumpkin carving/decorating contest. I thought you would enjoy these masterpieces from them. Amazing!

Hello Washington D.C.

Less than one week after my Girls weekend, Brian and I were off on another adventure. We took a trip to D.C. I had never been there and Brian was there when he was 12, so off we went. Thanks to everyone who gave us tips and ideas of what to do. Natalie, your email with your comments was awesome and a huge help. A big thanks to Joe and Jana Peterson and Bart and Shanna Stratton, our great family and friends, who welcomed us into their homes. We love you and want you to know you are awesome!

We did all the great historical site tours, Arlington Cemetery, Smithsonian museums, and the monuments. We even toured the White House and the Capitol building. I think in that one week, I learned more about the American history than I remember in school! Brian was able to get tickets to the David Letterman show off the internet, so we took a two day trip to NY. We were able to stop in Philadelphia and have Philly Cheese steaks and see the Liberty Bell and Independence Square and then off to NYC. We rode the subway, saw ground zero, grabbed some food on a corner stand and ate it on the Post Office steps across from Madison Square garden. Brian drove, which I think I freaked him out about driving there beforehand. He was a pro and handled it great! Thanks mom and dad for the GPS. It saved us; although Brian will tell you he is a walking navigation unit and didn’t need it. :) I think he might be convinced to get one now.

My favorite parts of the trip: Arlington Cemetery. There was such a reverence and respect there. In the changing of the guards, we saw firsthand just how much that reverence and respect means. The crowds voices were getting louder and louder and the guard, who did the exact same thing each and every time up and down the carpet, walked to the end and yelled something to the effect of this was a place of respect and to not talk. No one listened and so he yelled very loudly again (mind you he was holding a huge gun) to “BE QUIET” that got everyone’s attention and it went dead silent. It was so great!
We loved the D.C. Temple, it is so beautiful there and Brian and I were able to spend some time in the garden and visitor center. We loved Central Park, Times Square, and I loved the little shopping Brian let me do. Thanks honey. You can’t go to NYC and not shop! We also loved seeing our friends and family (Joe and Jana, Bart and Shanna, and Shum. Also we got to go see Cali, a friend of Brian’s from Centralia. It was fun to meet her and her family. They are darling! I can’t forget to mention that Brian loved the NY subway.
What a trip! We got to come home and then I went back to work the next morning. Nothing like living those vacations to the bitter end. Back to reality…… Brian still had four more days off…Hmmm I wonder what that would be like…..

Time out for Women

I had been looking forward to this particular "girl only" weekend for a while. The girls I spent it with were my mom, all my sisters and in-laws, (Heather, Mindy, and Sherrie we missed you!) If I can’t spend a weekend with my husband, I couldn’t find a better way to spend it. I love you all and miss you!

The conference was specially designed for women and the theme this year was “Joyful Life”. They had numerous motivational/Inspiring speakers mixed with great music from Hillary Weeks and Jason Deere. Hillary MC’d the event and was very funny, and spiritual at the same time. Jason Deere, who I kept calling John Deere :), performed songs from their albums: A National tribute to the Pioneers both “Joseph” and “Trek” .

In addition to the conference, we ate great food at the Cheesecake factory and In-and-Out burger. Of course, we also went shopping. I think it has to be one of our favorite past-times when we get together. During our shopping excursion, guess what I found…..another purse. It was really cute! I guess that means it’s time to get rid of one I already had. By doing so, it helps me justify the purchase to Brian because it means I’m actually getting rid of some of my stuff…. He really likes that idea!

My sisters and mom are wonderful. I love them all and am so glad I was able to spend such an uplifting and fun weekend with those so dear to my heart. I love you all and thank you for your great examples to me.

Corn Festival

I missed it this year! This is the first year that I have missed the Enterprise Corn Festival. This is a festival in my home town that started 18 years ago as a result of people coming from all over to buy my dad's yummy sweet corn. It's turned into quite the event for the whole town and for my family. Everyone goes home to help out, we sell the corn right off our yard on main street, and have turned it into a big bake sale with Navaho Tacos, hot corn on the cob and yummy treats to raise money for our family reunion in addition to selling the corn and produce. It's a very long and exhausting day, but it is so much fun to be with all the family. I think my dad picked around 4,000 dozen for just that one day.

This year it happened to fall on the 23rd of August, which was my birthday. We were in Utah for 10 days in July and I'm going back to Vegas in a couple of weeks so I decided I couldn't make the trip this year. I sure missed it though and probably won't miss another one.... I decided to take a trip down memory lane of what the corn fest is like at my parent's house. Also, you can click on this link to read the story the local paper wrote on the Corn Festival.
